What is Anam Cara?

Anam Cara is an Irish phrase often translated as “soul friend.”

To me, Anam Cara speaks to the kind of presence that accompanies rather than fixes. It is a way of being with ourselves and one another that is gentle, honest, spacious and rooted in care.

Anam Cara Sanctuary

Anam Cara Sanctuary is a quiet space for rest, presence, gentle movement and accompaniment in Mt. Lebanon, PA.

The sanctuary was created from the belief that every body and every season of life deserves beauty, dignity, belonging and support.

Here, rest is not treated as something to earn, but as nourishment, practice and a gentle return to ourselves.

Through carefully held experiences of rest, restorative practices, movement, tea, ritual and quiet care, Anam Cara offers supportive spaces where people can soften, reconnect and be accompanied gently.

About Cara

Cara Williams is an educator, restorative practitioner and founder of Anam Cara Sanctuary.

Her work weaves together restorative yoga, guided rest, mindfulness, sound, tea practices, seasonal ritual, nervous-system support and contemplative care to create supportive spaces for rest and reconnection.

With a background in education, social-emotional learning, mindfulness and embodied practices, Cara creates experiences that are gentle, accessible and intentionally held.

Her work is especially rooted in the understanding that people need spaces where they do not have to perform, explain or strive-spaces where they can be met with dignity, care and support.

A Philosophy of Rest and Accompaniment

Anam Cara is rooted in the belief that rest becomes more possible when the conditions around us offer support.

The environment matters.

The pace matters.

The language matters.

The beauty matters.

The feeling of being welcomed matters.

Through carefully held experiences of rest, presence and gentle movement, Anam Cara invites people into a different rhtythm-one where the body can soften, the nervous system can settle and the self can be gently remembered.
